rome-based architecture and design studio LAD has visualized ‘villae minimae’ (small villas) situated in natural landscapes. the collection of five isolated single-family homes have been developed and studied at a 1:200 scale. in all cases, the projects were conceived as appendices, detached from larger properties, but located in the immediate vicinity of those sites. therefore, the dwellings never contain more than two bedrooms, and interior spaces are minimalistic. beyond direct functionality, the houses are realized as artifacts or as machines for observing the surrounding panorama.
thematically, the structures have a provocative and autonomous approach. aesthetically, they are based on the distortion of a simple geometric figure, where each manipulation corresponds to a panoramic view from within the interior space, framing nature and allowing for contemplation of the landscape. this characteristic underlines the iconography of the concepts: the dichotomy between nature and edifice.
